Clelia Ciardulli is a DJ who has been based in Sheffield for 15 years and has seen the city lurch through various stages and incarnations of the continual decay of late-capitalism. While we knew her as the one-stringed bassist of dread-filled punks Dead Badgers (now deceased a second time), the first time I heard her DJ was a completely unexpected experience that I'll certainly never forget.
We've been committed devotees of her show ever since, and it continually provides a truly bizarre and jarring 2 hour glimpse into the void amongst the bright and breezy community radio regulars. Live, she distorts and changes the room through ultimate slow-burn.
Clelia's shows and performances present long-form, atmospheric mixing in its prime - utilising everything and anything to craft soundscapes that transport the listener or dancer to a completely different headspace. Who else would play a 15 minute hardcore-noise instrumental to a glitzy bar at 2pm with a devoted fanbase giggling in unison? Who else would present us with a tape to release that opens with 3 seconds of Ghost Town by The Specials?
Clelia's work is informed philosophically and academically by broader concepts of music and structures for living in the modern, fragmented world. In September 2014 she's delivered papers on DIY Music Culture at the Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium, has been taught by Italian experimental theatre maestro Dario Fo and leaves Sheffield to begin an MA in Community Learning and Development at Glasgow University. Closer to home, she draws influence from Spandril's 'Red Shift' events - late night, midweek excursions into the electronic held at The Audacious Art Experiment. These events rejected the dance/beat/rhythm structure of club-culture, freeing audiences to explore space in different directions and to be exposed to different patterns/emotions of communal music listening.
Dead Badgers, her Sheffield band with Patrick Bridge (Colourstar, Meccano Girlfriend) and Andy Sissons (Amorous Dialogues, Bruised Blue, Rob & Natas) explore frustration and weariness with repetitive, jarring post-punk that draws on both the american south and the british north. They too leave Sheffield leaving a trail of fantastic releases including a recent split with Rob & Natas on The Audacious Art Experiment.
This mix begins, as did our experience of her performances, with Trans/Human's The Wider. However this time, Clelia asked us to collaborate on the early stages. As such, we called on Hybrid Vigour regular Tina (From Work) to provide some additional administration. Thrown in there are some extra gems including tracks from a Blood Sport (Blast First Petite/Hybrid Vigour) member, masquerading as Peasant Life. Other than that, it's 45 minutes of Clelia Ciardulli, unrepentant and totally unique as always.
